Today Blue House Photography wanted to show off some of our stock photography from the neighborhood of Stapleton. It is located on the old site of Stapleton Airport. Stapleton is a great success in reclaiming used industrial or built-up urban area and turning it into something new and great. If you’ve never been through Stapleton start your tour with a drive down Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. past the old air traffic control tower and then to Central Park, one of the largest urban parks in Denver. And no tour of Stapleton is complete without a stop at Founders Green on 29^th Ave. Enjoy!

As the Denver Mayors race comes to an end tomorrow (pending a run-off) I thought I’d post a few photos I’ve made over the past few months of the James Mejia for Mayor Campaign. He is one of ten candidates on the ballot and currently is tied for first. Tomorrow, if no candidate reaches 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will head to the run-off on June 7. City Park!

Today Blue House Photography is back showing off our Denver stock images with a quick trip through City Park. The park is home to a memorial for Martin Luther King Jr., a spectacular lake, a boathouse and a fountain. The park also hosts the Museum of Nature and Science and the Denver Zoo. It is the largest park in the Denver Park system. The park was originally built in 1882 and designed by Henry Merryweather in the tradition of both English pastoral gardens and Central Park in New York City. Hope you enjoy.

Willow and Aaron Tie the Knot!

Willow and Aaron, chose not to have a traditional wedding and asked Blue House Photography to be a part of it. We met the couple Monday morning at the Denver Courthouse at the Wellington Webb Administrative Building where they were applying for and signing their wedding license. About 12 family and friends joined the couple at the courthouse. Following the “ceremony” we walked over to Civic Center Park for some portraits. The couple was very easy going and fun to work with. State of Denver International Airport

The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation held their annual luncheon on the State of DIA and Blue House Photography was there to capture the event. A panel of experts was convened to hold a discussion about everything from expansion plans, the planned train to DIA from Union Station, to the airport’s use of renewable energy. It was very informative and there are going to be some big things happening with DIA in the next few years.

Denver’s Golden Triangle

Blue House Photography continues our stock photo tour today with a couple shots from the Golden Triangle neighborhood. For those who aren’t familiar with the Golden Triangle name think of Civic Center Park, the Denver Public Library, and the Denver Art Museum. This area should see big changes over the next couple months and we look forward to photographing the new changes. There are two museums being build in this neighborhood: the History Colorado Museum on Broadway and 12th Ave and the Clyfford Still Museum being build on the west side of the Denver Art Museum. The Ralph Carr Judicial Complex is also being built on Broadway and 13th. All three projects promise to change the face of the neighborhood and the skyline of Denver and will be fun to watch.

Wedding Album Design

One part of weddings that I especially love (even though it's after the fact!) is designing the albums. While the shooting is obviously fun and exciting (we really do love to capture the essence of each day and see what makes every wedding unique), I also really love to put everything together in an album design that hopefully will last the couple a lifetime. Access Denver: Day One

For the fourth year Blue House Photography has had the pleasure to photograph the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Leadership Foundation’s Access Denver Program. It’s an intensive two day program where local executives who are new to the area or have been recently promoted get a crash course in all things Denver. The topics include Education, Transportation, Service and Economic Development among others. It’s one of my favorite events that I photograph every year. It’s a couple long days but I always manage to pick up a fact or two. For example did you know that only 32% of Colorado’s residents were born in Colorado? I had the pleasure of shooting Tuck Business School at Dartmouth College's annual CarniVAIL event last weekend at Vail. The weekend's annual event celebrated its 7th year. Sloans Lake & Edgewater

Blue House Photography continues our stock photo tour today with a wonderful little neighborhood on the western side of Denver called Sloans Lake. It is right on western edge of Denver bordered by Edgewater on opposite sides of Sheridan Blvd. If you’ve never been to Sloans Lake you should check it out. It’s one of the jewels of the Denver Park System and a great place to spend a summer afternoon. Edgewater is a cute little town with a central business district of local shops and restaurants. Sabor Latino gets a Facelift!

Sabor Latino, a long time South American and Mexican neighborhood favorite, has gotten a face lift. Located at 35th and Tennyson in the hot Highlands neighborhood, the restaurant has gotten an overhaul inside and out. A fresh new menu finishes the update. Denver Highlands: Denver’s Hottest Neighborhood

The Denver Highlands is one of Denver’s fastest growing neighborhoods. Settled when Denver residents moved beyond the original borders of the areas settled near Confluence Park The Highlands has been voted the hottest neighborhood the past couple years by Denver residents. The photos below show the Highland Bridge which spans I-25, Highland Square near Lowell Blvd and W 32nd Ave, The gazebo on the old Elich Garden’s site and Berkeley Park. Hope you enjoy! Michael Hancock running for Denver Mayor

As many of you know I used to photograph a considerable amount of politics in Denver and Colorado. Luckily for me I have kept some of those contacts and from time to time get to photograph a little politics. Most people, frustrated from the bitterness of the 2010 campaign, have not become engaged in the Denver Mayor’s race just yet. But Michael Hancock is off and running and Blue House Photography has had the fortune to photograph a few of his events and to have those photos used around town on billboards and on their literature. Green Weddings-- part 2

So, last time I blogged about Green Weddings, it was specifically about how as photographers, we at Blue House Photography, strive to be green. I'd like to take a look at some other aspects of a typical (and pardon that adjective, because I know every wedding is unique!) wedding.

Today I'd like to take a look at the flowers.

Now there are definitely some great florists out there who are sensitive to this issue. But, you as the bride and groom can also be proactive. Why, you may ask? Well, many of the flowers imported to the US are treated with harmful pesticides. These can be harmful to you health as well as end up in waterways. Not to mention, the huge carbon footprint we take on from having flowers flown halfway around the world.

The solution is pretty simple. Local! Seasonal! Think outside of the box when it comes to your flowers and ask your florist for suggestions. Chances are, they'll be excited to do something a little different. Now, you don't have to go with completely native species here; there are plenty of greenhouses that grow non-native species. Another option (gasp!) is to use artificial. When done right, these can be beautiful, not tacky. I'll post a few photos... Bet you can't guess which one is the fake bouquet!

Five Points: The Rhythm of the Rockies

Luke and I have some really cool art cards for purchase in the Five Points visitor's center. For those that aren't familiar with the area, Five Points has a rich jazz and African American history in Denver. After years of being somewhat dormant, the area is experiencing a gentrification. Whoopie!!!!

I had the opportunity to photograph some delicious whoopie pies a few weeks ago. The shoot was for Cakeheads Bakery. They are a specialty cake studio that creates everything from dog treats, to wedding cakes and now of course, whoopie pies. The photos will be used for marketing material via 3 Magic Beans Design. Denver's Ambassador

Few streets welcome visitors to Denver like 14th Street. Home to the Denver Convention Center and The Denver Center for Performing Arts 14th St. also boasts recent developments such as The Spire and the Four Seasons as well. The street also hosts The Convention Center Hyatt and will soon add a new hotel to the mix. The City of Denver, recognizing the importance of this street, has committed resources to bettering the streetscape and sidewalks to truly make this the most welcoming street in the city. It’s one of Blue House Photography’s favorite streets and I hope the photos do it justice.

New Tricks – HDR Photography

Blue House Photography has been playing around with HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. A HDR photograph allows the merging of several shots that allow you to see what would be in shadow or what would be a highlight without compromising the overall integrity of the image. It can be a great addition to any architectural photo shoot. In these images you can see the highlights through the windows while also seeing what would have been in the shadows for a perfectly blended photograph. The second photo of each room is the HDR Image.

Green Weddings-- part 1

So I've been thinking for a while now about what Blue House can do to be more "green" and also what have been wondering if there is any way we can influence others in our industry to do the same.... While I realize this is a trend right now, I think that the green movement goes deeper than that. I feel that no matter what your profession, we, as people have a responsibility to be as green as possible in our day-to-day life.
As photographers, Luke and I are already green in a few ways. We are 100% digital for shooting weddings, thus eliminating excess chemicals, waste, etc, that unfortunately film requires. By shooting digitally and offering our clients proofs in a digital form, we also cut back on wasted paper. Years ago when I shot film, I offered 4x6 proofs of all the images, which added up to a lot of wasted paper. (Who really wants 100s and 100s of prints...?) We also use all rechargeable batteries and car pool to all our weddings and mostly shoot locally. (While I wouldn't turn down a destination wedding, the footprint of airplane travel is huge!)
So, those are the basics, but I'm basically just scratching the surface. This is the first of a series of posts about Green Wedding Trends, etc.

Today we focus on the northeast Denver neighborhood of Stapleton. As many may know the neighborhood of Stapleton is located on the old site of Stapleton Airport. It is a great success in reclaiming used industrial or built-up urban area and turning it into something new and great. If you’ve never been through Stapleton start your tour with a drive down Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. past the old air traffic control tower and then Central Park, one of the largest urban parks in Denver. And no tour of Stapleton is complete without a stop at Founders Green on 29th Ave. Enjoy!

Portraits: Enviromental portrait vs. Heahshots

Picking a qualified portrait photographer can be hard work. Even more difficult can be deciding what kind of portrait you want to have taken. Blue House Photography is here to offer a few tips. First: decoding the styles of portraits. Do you want a simple headshot or an environmental portrait? A headshot is typically shoulders and up with a simple, plain background. An environmental portrait has the subject in their native surroundings and enhances the overall photograph. Think of a football player on the field and compare that to a modeling headshot.

Both styles of portraits can be useful. A headshot can be most appropriate when used on a business card or next to your bio on a website. It’s clean, simple and accomplished the goal of letting your client put a face to a name. But an environmental portrait may look better when trying to convey your expertise. It can accompany advertising material or go with a news article. Both types have merit; it’s up to you to decide how beneficial they can be for you and your business.

For anyone planning a wedding, you know there are a million little decisions you have to make. They can range from fun decisions, (the dress!), to tedious ones, (what type of font do you want on the invites.)

As wedding photographers, we get asked often to explain our wedding packages. We know that all photographers offer something a little different. (Yet another decision to make!) But don't get overwhelmed! Blue House Photography is here to help. :)

I've compiled a list of useful questions to ask when meeting with a wedding photographer to make sure you get the service you desire.

-- Do you shoot with one or two photographers?
--If two, are they both lead photographers or is one an assistant?
--What do your packages include? (ie, a disc with the high res images, a proof album, a wedding album.)
--Can I print from my disc or are the photos locked?
--Am I responsible for sharing my photos with my guests or is that a service you provide?
--Do you offer engagement sessions and are they included in your package?
--What is your turn around time to get me my photos?
--How many years have you been shooting/in business?
--Why do you enjoy shooting weddings? (Don't you want a photographer that loves weddings as opposed to one that is just there for a paycheck?)
--What happens if you get sick? Do you have a backup photographer that can step in?
--Will you go to my wedding site before the actual day for a walk-through?
--What type of editing do you do to the photos and how many images will I get?
--What's your price? (Okay, I know that money is an important issue for most people and I don't want to tell you to not ask about price, because even the highest budget weddings still have a budget! But-- make sure you are getting what you want from your wedding professional as far as service goes and not just a "good deal." You may get the price you want, but not what you need for a package. Or, you may get someone who is unqualified or doesn't care because they are offering such a "good deal." Remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably is!)

The Lone Star State

My husband's parents live in Katy, TX. (You may ask, where is Katy? I honestly thought it was spelled Cady until just a few days ago... It's a northern suburb of Houston.) They moved there 3 years ago and we hadn't made it to visit them yet. In fact, I'd never been to the great state of Texas. Although I know it's wrong, I had a couple of negative stereotypes about Texas in my head.... We had Thanksgiving in Katy and then headed up to Austin to check out the scene there. I've heard great things about Austin and it did not disappoint. Austin is a cool city with a great music scene, cool architecture, vibrant colors and generally a cool vibe. (Guess I have to rethink my stereotype!)

President Bill Clinton!

Former President Bill Clinton came to Denver yesterday for a rally for Sen. Michael Bennet. The rally, marking the start of early voting in Colorado, was at the Evie Garrett Dennis Campus out in Green Valley Ranch. About a thousand people attended and Delia and I had the fortune to get some tickets to the event. Here are a couple shots I took. I hope you all enjoy them. And remember to vote!

Hancock honored by SafeHouse Denver

Michael Hancock, the Denver City Councilman in the 11th district, received the 2010 Carolyn Hamil-Henderson Award from SafeHouse Denver last Saturday and Blue House Photo was there to capture it. SafeHouse Denver serves victims of domestic abuse and their children. Hancock was honored at SafeHouse Denver’s annual fundraiser and gala.

Frank and Erica's Wedding

Luke and I flew to Ohio last weekend to shoot Frank and Erica's wedding outside of Cincinnati. The weather was beautiful for October- sunny and 80 degrees! Erica looked gorgeous and the couple were both glowing with obvious love for each other. Every detail, from the flowers to the lighting in the reception, was perfect. We were honored to play such an important role in their special day.

Lost Creek

First Friday

Pacific Peak

Two Saturdays ago, we attempted to hike Pacific Peak, outside of Breckenridge. Like a lot of the hikes we like to do, Pacific is a 13-er, topping out at 13,950', and since it's not a 14-er is basically without other hikers. We left the house at 4AM and hit the trail by 6:30, thus allowing us to avoid any afternoon thunderstorms and also provided great light for photos.

Here we go! The trail, if you want to call it that, was basically unmarked. We had to bushwack a little to start. It definitely made the hike more interesting, but a lot harder as well!

The flora could not be beat. We saw some great wildflowers and I've never seen a thistle before like the one above.

John and Kate's Wedding

Blue House Photography shot John and Kate Kelly's wedding last Saturday at the Church Ranch Event Center. The weather was perfect, sunny and cool (for August...) Most of the guests came in from out of town. John's family is mostly from the East Coast and Kate's family came all the way from Russia. This gave the day a really special, close feel. The reception was kicked off with a foxtrot by the wedding couple along with an outfit change to get into the ballroom mood. Enjoy!

HDR Photography

I've recently been playing around with HDR Photography. While this isn't exactly new, it's new to me and I've been enjoying the results.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range Imaging. Basically, you take multiple exposures of the same image, allowing you to capture all the lights and darks in the image. You then blend the multiple images into one photo.

I photographed a house last week that I thought that HDR would be great to show off the highlights.--DP
